What to expect during
Therapeutic Plasma Exchange

TPE is a non-surgical, outpatient procedure performed under close medical supervision. Most patients find the experience comfortable and well-tolerated.

Step 1: Access

An IV line (or specialized catheter, if needed) is placed to allow blood to circulate through the treatment system.

Step 2: Plasma Separation

Your blood is gently processed through a medical device that separates plasma from blood cells. The blood cells are preserved and returned to you.

Step 3: Plasma Replacement

A portion of your plasma — where many inflammatory proteins, immune complexes, and toxins circulate — is removed and replaced with a sterile solution, typically albumin and saline.

Step 4: Return

Your blood cells, along with the replacement fluid, are returned to your circulation in a continuous, carefully monitored loop.

What to know about your session

Your care team will carefully monitor you throughout the entire TPE session, and your physician remains closely involved in guiding your overall plan.

Most sessions last approximately 2–3 hours

You remain comfortably seated or reclined throughout

Treatment plans may involve a series of sessions, depending on your goals and medical needs
